Most of us believe that back pain requires us to stretch the lower back on a regular basis. However, the source of discomfort in the lower back can often lie in the piriformis, located deep in the gluteal (buttock) area.
Tightness in the piriformis muscle is commonly associated with spending too many hours sat at a desk in an office or on the sofa at home. This kind of sedentary behaviour can also result in damage to the sciatic nerve.
Stretching the piriformis is relatively simple and should be done daily to prevent the development of a dull ache in the buttocks and lower back. Watch our chiropractor Rebecca demonstrate one of the simplest and most effective stretches of the piriformis muscle.
